The dire state of European seas gives reason to a coalition of dozens of NGOs, including OceanCare, to present the “Blue Manifesto” today – a roadmap for achieving ambitious, but necessary marine conservation goals. The target adopted in 2008 to achieve a good environmental status in European marine waters twelve years later, i.e. this year, has been completely missed. While the European Union had set an international milestone by passing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Member States failed to implement concrete measures to achieve the target.
The roadmap presented today lists concrete key points for achieving both the objectives of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and those of the UN’s sustainable development goals for the conservation of the oceans and for making a necessary contribution to climate protection.
