From 17 to 22 February, the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species will discuss many important decisions affecting migratory animals around the world. The situation is far from looking bright. Overshadowed by the climate crisis, too little attention is being paid to the fact that the Earth is losing biodiversity at an unprecedented pace. Governments must finally take decisive action to counter this ecological downfall.
Shifting Values Managing Director Nicolas Entrup is leading the three-member OceanCare delegation at the conference, which naturally focuses on protecting the oceans and their wildlife. And there is a great deal of overlap with the climate issue. For example, putting an end to oil exploration and exploitation in the seabed and reducing the speed of cargo ships would protect the oceans from dangerous noise and spare large quantities of greenhouse gases.
Another focus is the problem of “Aquatic Wildmeat”, i.e. the killing of dolphins, sea turtles, manatees and other marine animals for human consumption or for fish bait. For the first time, Aquatic Wildmeat expert Maximin Djondo from Benin, West Africa, is part of the OceanCare delegation.
